Kaua’i – Princeville, Queen’s Bath

This trip came up as a memory from a year ago. Looking thru the pictures and reminiscing, I decided it’s too cool not to share.

October, 2021. So lucky to have spent couple of days on the beautiful island of Kaua’i before heading to Honolulu! We enjoyed the quiet charm of the town of Princeville, the secluded Wyllie beach/Anini beach with shallow pristine water, the calm retreat of Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas nested in the tropical rain forest, but the ultimate highlight was the hike to Queens Bath. The Queen’s Bath is a tide pool carved into the lava rocks and is said to have served as a bath and relaxation place for the royals. The hike to get there is a short mile, however the trail is very steep and uneven, and because of the rain (short, but regular occurrence in the rain forest) extremely muddy and slippery. We were quite unprepared for this hike, to say the least. Most people wore hiking gear. We showed up in flip flops and I wore a dress😂 Not to be the the ones to shy away from challenge, we took it up ( or rather down in this case 😄), flip flops in hand, barefoot on the slippery clay, improvised walking stick in hand, and the pay off was absolutely worth it! Walking on the huge lava rocks on the shoreline , watching the waves rush into the multiple inlets and swimming in the clear water of the completely enclosed Queen’s Bath pool was amazing. If you ever make it there though, beware, this place is beautiful in calm waters, but extremely dangerous when the seas are rough, 30 people have perished when they were swept to the ocean by waves.(For that reason, this natural beauty is not promoted on the island and local authorities are strongly discouraging tourists from visiting.) They say “Great memories end with dirty clothes”. Considering the amount of clay we were covered in, this memory will last a lifetime! 😁
