We gave this idyllic island only 2days, but it won me over and I feel it deserves its own chapter.

St John, although comparable to St. Thomas by size and topography, is very different by vibe! There is no airport on the island, there are not many hotels or resorts, no major shopping, or big downtown. Because most of the island (60%) is protected National park, its beaches are pristine and untouched and its tropical rainforest lush, green and preserved. If tranquility, peace and undisturbed nature are your idea of vacation, St. John is the place for you! Every dream of a Caribbean beach you ever had, you can find materialized here!

We truly enjoyed our time in some of the incredible world class beaches – Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay, Maho Bay, Hawksnest and the hardest part was leaving one beach for the next. We spent some time in the rainforest hiking one of the longest trails (Reef Bay Trail -4.4 miles out and back trail near Coral Bay). The boys also explored a shorter trail ( Rum Head ) while I opted for the beach. As far as time, going to St. John is totally doable as a day trip, however once you get there you will not want to leave, and in any case it’s probably better spending few days on the island to see all the beauty it has to offer. There are few passenger and car ferries operating between St.Thomas and St.John, with schedules approximately every couple hours. We rented a car in St. Thomas and took it on the ferry to St.John. The price is $50 per car one way , or $65 round trip, plus $3 per car port fee. The trip itself takes about 30 min. Taxi cabs are available on the island, however renting a car would give you the most flexibility and chance to explore.(FYI there are only 2 gas stations on the island, so be prepared). I still can’t decide if Cinnamon Bay or Trunk Bay is my most favorite beach, but I know for sure they are among the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been on, and I can’t wait to be back!
